From 2003 to 2005, I served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Zambia. I lived in a rural village called “Nshinso” in the Central Province of Zambia where worked with community leaders on health education. I formed eight neighborhood health communities consisting of 10-15 members. Over the course of 2 years, we conducted 19 village inspections. We taught about malaria, water and sanitation, safe motherhood and child nutrition, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS. At the end of two years, there were 70 new pit latrines and 34 new rubbish pits where there had previously been none!
